The Olympic Canoe/Kayak events require the canoeists and kayakers to navigate a turbulent whitewater course through a series of gates in the quickest possible time. Penalties are assessed to the competitor's overall time for any gate that is touched or missed completely. Red gates must be gone through from the downstream side of the gate while the green gates can be paddled straight through.
