Definition: The Whitewater Classification System designation for rivers or rapids that contain all of the characteristics of Class IV, strong rapids, large waves, big holes, unpredictable currents, dangerous obstructions requiring multiple maneuvers to get through or around, with the added danger of being longer and containing more continuous features that may not be avoided. There is serious risk to swimmers and others may be of no help.
Alternate Spellings: Class 5
Examples: As a Class V river, the Bottom Moose River should only be attempted by experts.
